PC Restart
« on: July 29, 2011, 11:28:47 AM »
Has anyone had a problem with their PC restarting on its own while running DirectSOFT 5.3 with Windows 7 Ultimate? I recently installed DS for a project and while the program is open my laptop will shut down and restart for no known reason every so often. When it restarts I get the message that Windows has recovered from an error, etc. option to check online for a solution which doesn’t provide one. If I look at the detail of the error its Blue Screen such and such, mini dump, blah, blah, blah, and the file it lists saying it will provide help with the problem doesn’t exist.
I first thought that I may have had a virus of some sort, scanned PC, etc. before I realized it only happens when DS is running. To further solidify my suspicions I finally got the program finished and downloaded it to the PLC and then went online with it to verify all the IO etc. While online or trying to be for about three hours my laptop rebooted 3 times on its own, and I actually caught a glimpse of the blue screen a couple of those times. In addition to the rebooting by itself DS froze at least 3 times, lost status highlighting and couldn’t shut the program down and restart it without task manager. Once shutting it down could not restart it and had to reboot the PC myself.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I’ve about had it!!!

Have a look at the crash mini-dumps using this tool:  http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.  I find it's a little friendlier than using Microsoft's debugging tools to try to figure out exactly which driver is causing the crash.

Also, which method are you using to connect to your PLC?

Thanks,

Thanks, I'll try it. The PLC is a D0-06DR and I'm using the D2-DSCBL cable with a USB to serial adapter.

jsh, we haven't had any reports of this kind of failure that I know of. Let us know if the nirsoft tool helps or not.
