cannot connect to Ecom100
« on: May 12, 2009, 12:11:18 AM »
plc: 250-1
h2-ecom100

network is 1) dsl modem (static ip ending in .84) 2) ethernet switch 3) ecom module (static ip ending in .86).  I've used netedit 3 to configure the ecom100, i've followed the same steps in creating the link as I did when I connected to Host's plc at 12.69.41.166

problems/questions
1) ecom100 not responding to ping and directsoft cannot make connection (transfer protocol error, timing out)
2) ISP has told me to use an ip address ending in .1 instead of the .84 assigned to the modem, I've done it both ways, still no response

i've read about everything I can and can't seem to find out what the problem is, any help?

If your ISP told you to simply change to "an IP address ending in 1", then I think there is a disconnect with what type of addresses you really have. If your ISP assigns multiple static IP addressses to you, they can't be randomly changed as your ISP suggested.

So the first trouble shooting step is to understand exactly what your ISP is providing.

Did you purchase multiple static IP addresses?  Most ISPs charge extra for static IP addresses.  If the answer is yes, then there is a subnet or DNS issue with either the PC settings or ECOM settings.  If the answer is no, then the equipment arrangement is not correct - the switch has to be changed to a router and private network addressing has to be set up.

I purchased 3 static ip's, 1 for the plc (.86), 1 for an unrelated pc, and 1 they said was required for the modem (.84).  I was assuming the .84 would be my gateway address, but a tech on the ph said use the .1 address, he seemed like he was unsure though.  I am waiting for someone else to call me from there who is knowledgeable on the issue. subnet I used was 255.255.255.0,

do I need to go into each program and disable the dhcp server on the ecom using code?  I have been using the free version DirectSoft100, but with the iboxes in for the ecom, it puts it over and I now need to upgrade to the full version, I was waiting for that.

I was assuming when I assigned it the static ip's in netedit that was down automatically.

Your ISP is the problem here.  With those static IP's they should provide you with all the associated addresses:

These addresses wil be common for all three static IP addresses.

1) subnet address for the three static IPs (it won't be 255.255.255.0)
2) the ISP gateway address that those three static addresses pass through
3) at least two DNS addresses for the ISP DNS servers.

After you have that information, yes, you need to turn off all DHCP settings, and enter the above 5 addresses - IP, subnet, gateway, 2 DNS addresses.

Until you get all that info from them, you are stuck.

After you get that information, and enter it into the devices, be sure and power cycle them, so that they set up all the appropriate connections with the correct address data.
