BX-P-ECOMEX on NetEdit
« on: September 28, 2021, 04:07:16 PM »
I'm setting up a managed network of DL and Do-More PLCs and I just ran into an unexpected roadblock.

The network has about 1/2 dozen each DL06/260 units, and 1/2 dozen BX-DM1E units on the LAN, connecting through BX-P-ECOMEX modules.  Everything connects just fine, and until now, I've been able to scan modules and make changes in NetEdit (changing name and descriptions, mostly) on all units.

Today though, as I browse and select the units, I can no longer edit any of the BRX units.  The three edit tabs (Module Info, ECOM Settings, and ECOM Help) all disappear below when I select a BRX unit.  I can still select and edit the DL units just fine.  The thing is, I've previously been able to edit all of the units from NetEdit, and there have been no changes whatsoever to the BRX programs or configurations.

Any idea what is going on?  This is a heavily managed LAN, so I'm guessing maybe a security update to the firewalls has closed off a critical port, but I don't know what port(s) would need to be opened.  Thanks!

I've learned a couple things through additional testing:

If NetEdit scans the adapter/subnet that the BRX built-in ethernet port is connected to, (instead of the POM's subnet)  I can edit all the parameters as I would expect.  But then, I observe that the edited Name and Description fields in NetEdit are the same, regardless of which adapter/subnet I'm using to connect.  My text field edits carry over from the built-in adapter to the other.

So, I can read all NetEdit fields correctly from either ethernet port, but I can only edit if NetEdit is connecting through the built-in port?  That seems to be what is happening.

Here's the thing though:  I KNOW that I have previously edited these name and description fields in NetEdit, connecting only through the POM modules.  The reason I know that is that I am working strictly remotely through VPN, with no access to the built-in ethernet ports, ever.  Connecting that way would require a local wired computer connection, which I do not have.  (This additional testing was done on an identical BRX/POM here in my office, where I can in fact access both adapters.)

ECOMLT IS an ECOM "LIGHT", but ECOMEX is just a 2ndary port for the on-board.

Hence, you can assign ECOM parameters like Name and a Description to an ECOMLT and it gets written to that POM.  Move the ECOMLT POM around, and the Name and Description move with it.

However, the ECOMEX Name and Description utilizes the onboard settings (which are stored in the MPU, not the POM), which you can set via the onboard port.

My built-in ethernet port is shot, so I purchased the ECOMEX. Will this borrow the settings from the built in ethernet port and work off of it? I'm trying to get it set up using the USB POM. Like the original problem on this post I cannot find it or make it work.

You should be able to plug in the ECOM EX and use Designer or NetEdit to configure the ECOM EX POM IP address and subnet mask.

Not sure what you mean bu "shot".  You probably need to call tech support to figure out what's going on with the builtin Ethernet port.  If it is truly "shot", there may be other issues, one of which is that a secondary port EX may not work either.

Sorry,  it has quit working.  Net Edit cannot see it, I cant even ping it.  I did a PLC erase and that fixed it for about a week before it quit working again. I have a new BRX on order, but they are out of stock until November sometime

If clearing the PLC fixed it, it most likely isn?t a hardware problem. Replacing the hardware isn?t likely to be helpful.

When you say it "quit working," what are you doing with it? Just accessing the BRX PLC via Do-more Designer? Or is it being used to do other things (e.g. an HMI is polling it, or it is using RX/WX or MRX/MWX, or STREAMOUT/IN, etc.)? Also, are you using the ladder program to setup the IP address (e.g. using SETUPIP instruction)?
There are two types of people in the world; those that can extrapolate from incomplete data sets.
