Yes, POMs are hot swappable. Lots of folks do exactly what you are describing.

We built BRX primarily to fit in that DL05/DL06 to lower end DL205 space. We are launching 32 point modules and remote I/O controllers for BRX very soon though, so BRX can also be used in higher count apps as well.

How about an I2C POM module? I am amazed at what sensors are available for the Arduino!  I’d like to use them for prototyping, to see if a concept works before adding it to our systems using the BRX with industrial grade parts.

Right now I need a specific type of sensor. They are a available at $12K from a number of vendors. No way I get to play with one of those. However it looks like I can get the data I need from an Arduino with a handful of sensors for about $75, which have just arrived. Going to have learn a bit of C programming and if it works then I need to translate the concept to the BRX.

The challenge of I2C is in how to generalize it to a PLC program code environment. Our controllers are capable, but they aren't C code. I'm also very concerned about the physical connections and how well a wired connection (as opposed to PWB traces in multi-layer boards) would work in industrial automation. I don't know, but I would be very surprised if a wired connection to these sensors would offer any resistance to electrical noise or ESD, or would offer stable comms. If we put out an interface, people will expect it to work.

And for the record, we use several I2C chips in our products...but they aren't hung out on the end of wires.

In regards to I2c we have taken a dip in the Adafruit sensor pool.  In particular the TCS34725.  Unfortunately I haven't had time to try to develop a direct interface on the BRX.  For now we have this sensor attached to a Raspberry Pi via a 4 foot long 5 pole M12 cable.  The signals on this cable include +5V, GND, SDA, SCL and a digital output to control the sensor's LED.  To my knowledge there is not a twist spec on these M12 cables like you'd find on something like CAT5.  This cable is routed in parallel with a cable carrying 480V 3-Phase AC (very low current).  So far we have not had noticeable issues collecting data from this sensor. 

Would I recommend this setup for use in the wild?  Probably not.  It would probably be a good idea to get more separation from the AC lines and use a better data transmission cable.  However it has proved solid for us in production and I'm not losing any sleep over it.

For those interested, we are using Modbus TCP between the PI and the BRX.  This hybrid solution provides a solid solution but it would be nice to remove the extra vendor and stay all BRX.

The sensor you are using is the RBG color sensor? If so that is the exact one I am interested in using. Once I get further on maybe I could ask some questions?

I get the point about noise issues. The homebuilt 3d printer and CNC guys are always struggling with that. If you see their wiring you can always see why. I have never had noise problem because I am very careful about avoiding it. But I can see where it could cause issues for Host.

No problem G.  I'm juggling a few too many projects right now and misspoke.  The RGB sensor is actually tied to an Arduino and we are using RS232 back to the BRX.  

The PI and modbus TCP is being used in an automated firmware programming project for some TI chips.  The plan is to move our future RGB sensing to this framework as the modbus gives us a bit more structure and flexibility.

Another approach for these I2C sensors may be developing a 485 to I2C bridge.  This would allow the I2C lines to be kept shorter.  I need to do some more research but I did stumble upon the site below.

Damn I need to follow closer!  I got the Arduino working with the color sensor and I just saw this response from you again.  I ordered the RS-232 adapter from Coptonix about two hours ago!

I get the reservations about I2C working properly, and noise problems and such.  However we are building a game changing system for an industry that is so tied to really expensive hardware that isn't actually necessary.  I've got my sensor device working and installed in a system.  The toughest part of the entire task has been finding a way to communicate with the PLC!!!!  PLCs are supposed to be the easy way to do this stuff.

I am more and more interested in a POM for I2C every day.  I see it as a master device. Read and Write function blocks to talk to a device the same as you have for Modbus. Forget doing or supporting any C programming on the other end. The only reason I have an Arduino in the loop is to translate the data from the sensor.  I see doing that in the PLC as being a way better method.

As far as wiring problems go our whole systems are on a single skid.  All sensors are within 5 feet of the PLC and if we need something further there are other methods to get there like 4-20ma.

I've got my 14 year old grandson working on a solar experiment for us.  Using an Arduino with a SD card for data storage. we have a motor shield for driving a single stepper motor at very slow speed.  We have a sunlight intensity sensor, humidity and temperature, atmospheric pressure, and four additional temperature sensors, all on I2C for under $200 TOTAL.  If the project is successful we may only need one or two of those sensors and of course it will then be industrial sensors connected to BRX PLCs.  With any luck LOTS of BRX PLCs!

I want to Do-More, and I think you guys should lead the way to Better, Faster, and Cheaper.  Is that asking too much?  No hurry, yesterday or the day before will be just fine.
