I agree I use DC and interposing relays on the outputs. The relays have a diode to suppress the surge from the coil. I have never (in 40+ years, yes I am old AB 2/15 was the first PLC I installed) had a problem with the output card on the PLC. I do snub the load on the output side to improve the relay life, and if the load is large I will use a zero cross solid state relay to switch the load.
