Can't assign Element to Nickname
« on: October 22, 2007, 12:20:29 PM »
I tried to use the "Use a nickname and assign it to an element later" approach for a couple C variables. I want to do something at exactly 11:55 AM every day. I assigned a the nickname IsNow1155 and just set its size in the dialog box. Later I went to the documentation editor and tried to give C1750 that nickname. It only beeped. When I tried Assign nicknames, I could find my nickname in the list. When I then went to the element box to key in C1750, the nickname list window scrolled around with each key stroke. I did something else (can't remember exactly what) and got a error box that said I had to pick another nickname since my IsNow1155 nickname was assigned to UB0.  ??? I couldn't find a way to delete the nickname all together to start over, the old way. Now I'm stuck. Please advise as to how to get out of this mess. Thanks.
Roger

I tried to re-create the problem to make it easier for you to recreate the problem, if there was one. When I tried a second time to set the nickname to C1750, it let me. Go figure. I'm still curious about what went wrong -- but I don't need immediate assistance. Roger

There is an Assign Nicknames function that must be used.  It's under the Tools menu (Tools->Assign Nicknames...).

You cannot use the Documentation Editor since the nickname is already bound to "unassigned bit 0" (hence the meaning of UB0).  The Doc Editor treats that the same as you trying to reassign X0 to C17, i.e. it won't let you without you editing the "already used" nickname bound to X0.  If you go to the TOP of the "Doc Editor" table, you will see all of the "unassigned" nicknames and can edit them there (e.g. you wanted to change your IsNow1155 to IsNow1150).

What would be a good "fix" would be if the Doc Editor saw that you are actually trying to "duplicate" an "unassigned" nickname, and give you the OPTION of "assigning" it OR not.

Franji1,
Thanks for the explanation. It would be nice to have the Doc Editor be able to do the job, but now that I know what to do, I can skip all the wrong paths next time.

I think Mark's (Franji1) approach is a good one. We should be able to add that to DSP 6 no problem. Please add that one to the list Mark!
