The GX/GY memory was designed to be used by remote and Slice I/O. The intention was to map the remote I/O into GX/GY locations so as not to chance overlapping your local X/Y with it. But I'm not sure if it has actually gotten fully utilized. At any rate, we at Host Engineering are not the experts on this. So, unless there are some experts browsing our forum that can answer, you'd probably be best served to ask the Automation Direct techs directly, or on their forum.
The ECOM100s, per se, do not utilize GX/GY specifically. To establish communications between ECOM100s of 9 DL06s does not require knowledge of GX/GY. You can set up peer-to-peer communications between the ECOM100s by configuring peer-to-peer table(s) in the ECOM100(s) and using the RX/WX instructions (or if you have DirectSOFT5, the ECRX/ECWX IBoxes). This type of communication is covered in the ECOM100 manual (specifically, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4). (Download ECOM100 manual from Automation Direct's website):

Thanks Greg. Yea, I was way off base thinking the Globals would do it. Auto Direct tech support confirmed what you said.
Also, the HX-ECOM-M PDF needs updated. Only the RX & WX instructions are shown
And there is a sample proram that comes with DirectSoft 5 that utilizes ECRX/ECWX
