DS5 version 5.3.194 lock-up
« on: October 04, 2011, 04:18:29 PM »
I have had this lock-up occur twice on my xp-pro laptop, Both times it happened after using the delete key to delete a single cell in the description column of the documentation editor. I tried exporting the documentation to a .csv file and all of the data appears to be intact. BTW, the .csv file is 36.0 KB. Visual Studio debugger gives this message when I run it:

Unhandled exception at 0x00f23bb3 in Csmain.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000210.

Thank you for your consideration.

It just happened again, only this time I had done a copy and was pasting in the wiring info column of the documentation editor. I just lost about 3 hours worth of ladder editing when it locked up (shame on me for not saving :'() Any body else have this problem? I couldn't find anything in the FAQ that lined up with my problem.

Historically this points to a documentation database that has become corrupt.

My suggestion at this time would be to make a copy of the project (just in case), then export the documentation to a CSV file and open that file in Excel or Notepad and check it for completeness and for errors, correcting anything that looks wrong.

Then import the documentation from that file back into the project, make sure to use the 'replace' option. This will rebuild the documentation database.
Good design costs a lot. Bad design costs even more.

...I couldn't find anything in the FAQ that lined up with my problem.
Check out DirectSOFT FAQ0040:http://www.hosteng.com/FAQFiles/DirectSOFT.htm#FAQ0040

Or you can browse there

Notice "DirectSOFT locks up" is one of the symptoms that can happen with a corrupt documentation database.

Notice "DirectSOFT locks up" is one of the symptoms that can happen with a corrupt documentation database.

I found this faq the second time it crashed, but I could not find any corruption in the exported database and also tha faq said: "Crashing behavior in all known cases to date have been remedied in later Builds of DirectSOFT. Therefore the first thing to do is to upgrade to the latest version. "

I did everything that the faq said to do, and that is why I said it didn't line up with my problem.

This morning I exported the database and went through the .csv file then I imported the database back in using the replace option as MikeS suggested.
We'll see if it still acts up.
Also I wondered about the autosave function of DS, the newest one in the folder was 3 1/2 hours old. Is autosave time-based or does something else trigger it?

Please excuse any apparent shortness, I am very short on sleep and this plant is supposed to run TODAY.

The Autosave happens every time you manually Save-Project-To-Disk. It is not auto-triggered by time in the background. The Autosave also exports the project which can be useful for documentation corruption recovery. You could import an older Autosave time-stamped TXT file that way.

No worries about "apparent shortness"... crashing is very annoying!  >:( We hate it and have revamped the documentation for the next release of DirectSOFT in hopes of subverting these kind of issues in the future.
