That greatly depends on the type of communication you are using and the baudrate:
     - RS232?
     - RS422?
     - RS485?
     - Ethernet?

With RS232C, and a good quality cable (shielded w/good ground), and not much electrical noise (which in a house there normally wouldn't be), then you can go about 50 feet. Right at this point, and/or a little more and the signal starts to seriously deterioate. So, going 20 feet in your case should not be a problem.

Hope that helps!
