GMail emails suddenly stop working
« on: August 07, 2021, 04:35:23 PM »
I have four sites with current firmware BRXs sending daily production emails to management.  Two of the sites were flashed in February to current firmware to take advantage of adjustable TLSTimeslice.  One just came online late June. Empirically I found a time slice of 3000 or so worked reliably, so I set at 4000 to give some margin.   All four sites ave been working well, using the same GMail account and the same BRX program (except for one site with slightly different PLC).

Two of the sites spontaneously quit emailing late last month.   I looked at one, but the only time I had to troubleshoot, all I learned was that the fail relay was coming on, indicating failure to EMAIL.  Now, I have local PC's at three of the sites.   So for the one that quit working but had a PC I remoted in and ran DMLogger, only to find that GMail was dropping the connection after 10 seconds.  Found I could make that one work by increasing the TLS time slice to 10000 (when 4000 worked before).  No change in the PLC program or scan time.

So I assumed the other failing one presumably had the same (inexplicable) issue.   Logged on remotely today from my own laptop, since there's no local PC, and even a time slice value of 50000, while it does increase total scan time, does not result in a successful email.  The scan time also seems to have a sawtooth of maybe 2ms with a period of maybe 4.5 seconds.    The screenshot was taken with a time slice of 10000, which it's using, but never successfully emailing.   If I test creds from DMD device configuration it succeeds.   The creds should not have changed since it was working, and the same login and password are in use at the three working sites (including the one where I increased the time slice).

This is weird.  I can't figure out what it might be other than something with GMail, but can't get DMLogger info for this one particular site, natch.

So the initial jump from the 6ms range is when I enable the EMAIL, and then drops when I disable again, so the excess scan time is due to the BRX trying to email.  The skinny spikes are normal and generated elsewhere in the program.   The timeout in the device config is 12 seconds, so the sawtooth frequency is wrong both for the device timeout and the 10s GMail timeout.

Did you refresh the CAs like I had to do a while back? I believe you had to do it too a day or 2 later.

Good call!   Yes, I refreshed all four sites a day or two after that thread, and all four did work after that.   Got nothing to lose, maybe I'll redo this one problem site again.

I'm also baffled why the other site that quit needed a 150% increase in the Email time slice to start working again, with no change in average scan time.  Weird.

Hosties have any other ideas on either of these two questions, especially troubleshooting the first?   Still waiting for an opportunity to drop to prog mode to try reloading the CAs again.

Thanks!

Update:  OK, got my change to drop to prog and reload the CAs, and it's working now (at least once, thus engaging the 5&5 warranty).    No idea why that would need to be done more than once.

The certificate length will affect the processing time. Some are quick, others take much more time.

Gmail has blocked access for less secure apps as of May 30 2022, which is when my email instructions quit working. Has anybody figured out a workaround for this issue?

I believe app passwords are still working.   I have about 10 sites using that method and they're still working.   I did a step by step for how I got it set up at https://forum.hosteng.com/index.php?topic=3163.0

Thanks Controls Guy. I verified that this still works. I'll make a BRX FAQ for this.
