OPC-UA Support
« on: August 25, 2020, 06:47:16 PM »
This question comes on the heels of recent discussion concerning some of the new features coming to the BRX platform later in the year. Is future support of OPC-UA an option on the BRX platform? Direct OPC-UA support would be nice and might open up more use of the BRX as a protocol translator. Also, has support for MQTT Sparkplug B been investigated further?

I think something Sparkplug will happen eventually. Marketing guys have their opinions about development priorities, though, and we try to follow that.

OPC-DA is definitely something we have looked into. It is resource heavy however, and will likely occur in the form of a co-processor.

No real change. OPC-UA would be preferred between the two (at this point), but due to high resource requirements it would have to occur in the form of a co-processor. We like the idea, but it isn't as simple as bolting a protocol onto the PLC.

BobO,

Agreed on the OPC-UA standpoint!  That alone would be outstanding...keep us posted!

We're going to evaluate the effort to do an "HMI" POM that would support OPC-UA and Sparkplug B. I like the idea of such a product, and recent changes to the PLC engine have made tag data available to be used for such things.

For a lot of us, OPC is an oil conglomerate, and Sparkplug is a gas engine part. That's probably what your marketing guys know.
