Title: Software Icon Size Question
Post by: Mike Nash on September 20, 2012, 07:28:06 PM
Call me old-fashioned, but I still use Directsoft 4 rather than 5 simply because I can configure it to allow me to actually maximize the ladder view window without losing icons entirely. (Per FAQ0151 http://www.hosteng.com/FAQFiles/DirectSOFT.htm#FAQ0151 (http://www.hosteng.com/FAQFiles/DirectSOFT.htm#FAQ0151) that ability was disabled.) I covet my code space as most programs have far more than three contacts in a rung and good annotation then eats up almost all of the vertical space if the icons are huge.

While I have downloaded the new Do-more Designer I have not yet loaded it since it needed to install some additional Microsoft component and that always worries me  :-\.

I've seen the video demos and some posts showing the screens and well ...

My question is - Can we (the user) shrink the icons to something less bloaty?

Yep. I think it is part of the toolbar options accessed through the right click menu...'Customize' perhaps. I'm not in front of a computer though to check. Will update the post when I am.

You can also turn off the text below the small icons, leaving just the icons.  That option is in the Global Options setting (View->Options... Global tab).

There are some people that turn off all the toolbars to get the desired affect of having the entire screen be the client area (e.g. Ladder View) except for the Menu and Status bar.  They use hot keys, menus (menu bar and right click), and the status bar for navigation.

Yes...right click on the menu area and select 'Customize...'. On the 'Options' tab, toggle 'Large Icons' off.

And as Mark already mentioned, you can also turn off the text.

Finally, you can create your own toolbars with only the commands you want...reducing the toolbar to one row.

Here's a screen shot just to visualize what was mentioned already. The 'Offline', 'Online', and 'Ladder' toolbars are present with small icons and text has been turned off. This monitor's resolution is set to 1280x1024, and even with the Project Browser and Data View opened, there's a good bit of coding space.

To get even more code on screen (or if you have a lower-resolution monitor), you can also zoom out by clicking 'Zoom Out' in the 'View' menu.

Thanks so much! Now to check out that Microsoft bit that needs to load (and hope it doesn't break any other software.)

Thanks again for the responses. BTW, I hope when DS6 is released you'll have this ability again there too.

Tweaking the toolbar buttons is on the list.
