I have encountered numerous messages when attempting to reassign an unused coil, bit, address, etc., saying that the request cannot be completed
as the memory location has been assigned. I am not certain why the software would block such a request when the nickname, coil, address, etc., is unused in the program. I would certainly appreciate being questioned as to whether or not I wish to override something previously assigned, but I find myself, as a result of testing logic sequences, being prohibited from renaming the next unassigned bit and running though multiple "not permitted" messages until I find a useful "unused" memory location. Please help me understand this time consuming and frustrating issue, as I do not always want to delete some of the test scenarios I have set up in prototyping systems.

Nicknames are essentially tag names. There is a one-to-one relationship between the nickname and the element it is assigned to, and it cannot have more than one name. If you want to rename the element, you can do so from the Documentation View.
Maybe you can give us a little more detail of exactly what you are doing, and we can give you a bit more guidance about the best way to approach it.

That was a bug in 2.7.1, which was fixed in 2.7.2:
The new Create Nicknames dialog Find Next Unused now also skips elements that already have a Nickname.
