Title: Do-More Designer 2.7.3 Crashing
Post by: Garyhlucas on April 22, 2020, 09:37:23 AM
Today I downloaded and installed 2.7.3 and it closes suddenly with no warning of any kind.  Restart and it runs a few minutes and does it again.  Also every time I made a change it warns about not being able to write to the default backup location.  I am thinking conflict with McAfee AntiVirus and Firewall, which I turned off the Firewall during installation for 15 minutes. AD tech support couldn't offer a solution, it crashed again while on the phone with them!

Dell G7 laptop running Windows 10 with SSD and tons of space.

Sent home to work because of Covid 19 and about the only things I could work on from home are wiring diagrams and PLC programming!

You may need to uninstall/re-install.  Try that.  If that doesn't fix it, double check your Folder Settings and make sure all of the folders specified in that list exist and are writable by you (some IT groups like to lock down the company PCs).  File->Manage Projects->Folder Settings.

If that does not work (or if it does work), let us know!

I have reinstalled twice and uninstalled and rebooted before and after each time.  No IT guys have touched this computer, its mine own because I have a BRX in my home built CNC machine too.

Can you bring up the Folder Settings dialog.  Make sure all those folders exist and you can write to them (there is both logical and fully qualified folder names).

If that all works, post that Folder Settings dialog.

Bring it up.  Make sure it has focus/top window, then hit Alt+PrintScreen (next to Scroll Lock) to copy that dialog to the clipboard.

Open Paint (or whatever graphic editor) paste it, and save it as a GIF or JPG

Post that .GIF/.JPG file as an attachment to this forum (see Attachments and other options below the Edit Post form)

Getting desperate here.  Uninstalled 2.7.3 and installed 2.7.2 and it crashes the same way.  Does the error log attached help at all?

Thanks

Are you getting any .dmp files?  Look in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Do-more\Designer2_7\Bin
They have a date/time stamp.  Email them to support at hosteng.com

Did you look at the Folder Settings?  Can you place it here?

Folder Settings?

Here's mine (see attachment).  I always keep my project folder tied to the current version (this is one of the prompts during the install when upgrading 2.6 to 2.7).  Hence, my Projects folder is below the Designer2_7 folder.

All these folders exist.

If the Projects folder is pointing to a server or virtual drive that it does not have access to, or to an older version of Designer that has been wiped from the PC, you will get strange behavior.

Similar issue for the Backup, Auto Save, and Edit History folders.

Sorry - I should have resized the dialog - the full paths were being clipped.  This one shows all full paths.

The issue with file paths went away when I changed the default location. When I tried to look at folder permissions I got a message that I don?t have the administrative permissions to see that information!
It?s my personal computer I bought new and no one else uses it. So I called Dell and they remoted in and tech told me I had Microsoft bitblocker and it has encrypted my folders.

Don?t know what to believe but I am getting upset that every damn thing I need to do anymore is blocked by passwords and security that keeps me from getting things done.  I don?t know how to proceed. I need DMD and both 2.7.2 and 2.7.3 crash and because the computer is new I don?t have any earlier versions.

You should be able to access the "public" folders.  I don't think it matters whether they are encrypted or not, since the O/S should take care of that.

Yes I can access the Public folders and the problem with it crashing is really strange.  It is almost like I told it to close.  One minute I am working, just sitting there looking not touching any keys and poof I'm looking at the desktop as if it never ran.  At the moment this is the only program that is giving me a problem and everything else is really stable.

I started a project in 2.7.2 and I still have 2.6 on the office computer, but it won't open a project done in 2.7.  Any way to fix that so I could go back to 2.6?  I installed the C-More software on home computer because I don't have admin rights to the office computer even though I have it home and I need DMD for my home CNC.  So I figured I'd just work on my home computer but that hasn't worked out except for using the C-More program.

Also, you should install 2.6 on your new laptop.  I am concerned that it may have similar issues.  I will email you a link to the install.

FYI...

Figured out that the laptop did not allow Designer to write to the Public Documents folder.  ???

"Run As Administrator" works until they figure out the file system credentials issue.

I just want everyone to know what a fantastic effort  Franji1 made to help me get DoMore Designer working on my personal computer at home.  Without his help I was completely stuck and he figured out the issue.  This is why I use AD And Do-More, because for 25 years it has always been like this.

It turns out on my Dell G7 laptop with W10 which I bought brand new just 4 months ago and for which I am the only user, I don't have full admin permissions!  Not sure where this BS lies, Dell or Microsoft but it is completely unacceptable in my book.  There is also something called bit locker on this computer which I learned that if you don't the keys you can brick the computer completely.

I am pretty sure that security measures won't be complete until only the hackers can get access to a computer.

Thanks again to Mark!
