Title: DMD locks up when you don't get the ip address correct on the links setup
Post by: brucek on October 01, 2018, 04:25:31 PM
This is probably known but i couldn't find it in the search and was probably not searching for the right thing but. When trying to connect to a PLC, usually remote thru the internet, I get something wrong in the ip address or i didn't index the 28784 number in advanced. First the Comms window locks up. Then you alt-cntrl-del close the window. Then it just dings at you in the dmd program, again alt-cntrl-del and reopen.

Now i know if i didn't put the wrong ip address in or forget to index the port number this wouldn't happen but i'm getting up there and the mind suffers.

This is obviously not the end of the world just if it has slipped by i wanted to bring to your attention.

Have you let it sit there for a few minutes to see if it recovers? The reason I'm asking is that sometimes the timeouts over the Internet can be a bit longer than you think.

I've let it wait for a minute maybe. Basically if you set up a link that doesn't work for some reason the link box locks up. Then you can wait a bit and click the X and close eventually, now dmd is still open and that just makes a ding noise,( when you click the mouse) and you have to open task manager to close that, (I've never waited more than a minute or two here). Then reopen dmd put in the right link and your all set. We have multiple networks at different locations that are plc's are on and sometimes you enter the wrong one setting up a new plc. Once the link is working if you have a problem connecting to it then it just hangs for a bit and finally times out and your good to try again.

If you want to recreate it just add a new link and set up an ip address that you know is not going to take you to anything. it will have the spinning circle cursor for a bit and say Not Responding when you click on the red X box to close.

I don't use the Link wizard i click on the link editor and enter in the info so maybe that has something to do with it. This has been happening for a few revisions I just never posted about it I guess.

The entire link creation and management process is getting rebuilt now. We will try to understand what is going wrong now and make sure sure it doesn't happen in the new environment.

funny after reading this post, guess what happen? I was setting up a new Do-More and I forgot to change my notebook to the address I had put in the H2 cpu using USB. Comms did not like it when I tried to create a ethernet connection and so I had to use Task Manager to close it. Well of course Do-More froze so I had to use Task Manager to close that. I sure will welcome a new comms program.
