Title: Debounce and zero time
Post by: Bolt on December 04, 2017, 09:40:52 PM
I like the new debounce instruction. It just has one thing that annoys me. I can't enter a zero value in either of the two time fields. I also can't enter a symbolic constant that is set to zero. But I can enter V0, and set its value to zero. Seems like a little bit of a glitch to me.

Write your own and do a CALL.  Debounce (and SCale with Parameters) is typically some of the first boxes I write on platforms that let you roll your own.  S7 for some reason, is missing statistical functions.  Mean, median, standard deviation and so on.  There's probably an add on library somewhere that has it, but on a platform that lets you write your own, doing so is probably quicker and easier than finding it, plus it's done exactly the way you want it.

Due to the way the hysteresis was designed, I think we decided it needed at least a 1 in each direction, but looking at the code again, I think it works fine. We'll look at relaxing the range definitions for the editor.

Cool.  Not a huge deal, but it helps in making some single sided latches, off delays, etc.

Five minute change. Should be in DmD 2.2.

Bobo,
Did the zero time issue in OFFDTMR ever get resolved? If the time was zero, then the output would never turn on at all (Even though the input was high).

That would require changing a behavior that would potentially affect running programs. We are very reluctant to do that, even if something is technically broken.

Thanks.  I like the quick turn around and response from you guys.  The president of the company engaging directly with the end users resolves/satisfies allot of things quickly.

Keep up the good work.

I understand what you are saying...
I have a bunch of these instructions in the field that I hope nobody ever enters a zero in via the HMI... I did not think to test at zero before I launched the projects.

That is pretty cool.  To be fair, AB does have an IICIP  (Intern In Charge of Ignoring the Proles)

I LOLed more than appropriate.

The cow and the chicken are interested in your breakfast, but the pig is truly committed to it. We like to think of ourselves as being "pig committed".

Got the full gouge-O-matic treatment from AB today. Four year old motor control center with empty door spaces and we want to add 1/2 hp vfd and a 1 hp vfd. AB says this is a ETO Engineer To Order task. $6850 EACH!  The whole 3 section MCC originally cost us about $15,000.  The AB factory guy says they have 80% of our market in PLCs. I replied “yes I know, those poor bastards. We are trying to correct that!”

For $6,850, they shouldn't send you a bucket, or a motor!  They should send an AB employee to crank on the machine personally.

Can you buy an empty bucket and put in your own VFD?  I don't think you can UL it if you do that, but the project may not need that.

That is what I would try to do!

I have been too busy lately, and it seems the only time I have said anything on here in a while is when I am complaining or mentioning something that I have had an issue with...

Let me take a moment to say that Host Engineering has been great to work with! And the Do-more line of controllers saves me time, and make my projects look good.
Keep up the good work!

It helps when he is also one of the software guys making the changes and fixing the issues! Not to mention how many times I go to monitor the forum and find all the technical issues already resolved...  ;D  (@BobO and @franji1 have already spoiled me). The "problem" is, the inborn "tech" in him just won't die. He can't help himself.

I wish everyone had that problem (i.e. a desire to satisfy their customers!)  ;D

It's a rare anachronistic malady, almost stamped out thanks to modern apathy.

I'll see if I can work harder to care less, but I'm pretty lazy at times, so no promises.

I see what you did there!  :D

Reminds me of the old joke:

What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?

I don't know and I don't care!

I suggested the DEBOUNCE instruction some time ago. With this instruction I will be able to get ride of over a third of the timers that I'm currently using and clean-up my code.

I really like the OFFTMR, it wasn't that hard to program that function before, but I find I'm using it a LOT. Thanks guys

I am going to have to look into this. We have a boat load of timers, more than 100 for just this purpose in our program.

I really like that DoMore is rapidly adding simple instructions for all the common things you need to do. I do NOT like the massive toolbox approach that seems to be common today. I need two wrenches but I have to carry the 100 lb tool box up the ladder to apply them to the task. Ladder? Who uses ladders? Get a manlift to carry the tool box!

I could probably write a book on design methodology, but there are a couple of fundamental ideas that dominate ours:

Tinker Toys) A handful of simple pieces designed to bolt togather to create more complex things. There is an optimization function here, where you balance the complexity and power of each piece...we don't want to be too granular or too monolithic. When done right, you can solve lots of problems very well.

Functional Tiers) Comm is a great example.
- High level: PEERLINK, designed for the guy who doesn't want to work that hard at it and doesn't need the performance...just needs it to work.
- Mid level: RX/WX/MRX/MWX/DLRX/DLWX, still pretty easy, but certainly requires more effort to gain more reward.
- Low level: Custom protocol instructions. For the guy willing to put in the effort, he can do dang near everything he needs.

You can build a debounce function with timers (tinker toys) but when you do this often enough that it results in a significant increase in code size, there is an obvious case for adding a tier. We frequently start with the low level instructions and then add layers above as we better understand the problem. When we did the SDCard for BRX, we started with the low level file functions, and then added FILELOG, because we knew that 90% of users just want to log stuff without becoming file I/O experts.

And y'all definitely play a role in this. If you see a hole, say something...we do listen.
