Title: Element Picker
Post by: Dean on August 11, 2015, 12:57:55 PM
The Do-More CPU and Designer is the first "high end" system I have ever used, so take this for what its worth. The new Element Picker popup so far has been more of a nuisance than a help. I can see its usefulness in knowing what is used and unused, and quickly choosing or finding nicknames, but it seemed to be more in the way than not IMHO. I did find how to turn it off in the options, but maybe similar to the Instruction Pallet, there could be a check box right on the Element Picker to  select whether to display it or not?

And that is always the fear with things like this...and why we always provide a way to revert to previous behavior. We'll see if we can make it easier to disable.

What about it made it a nuisance? Size? Content? Other? We went through several iterations to try and make it available, yet unobtrusive, and I generally don't find it to be in my way anymore (early versions annoyed the poo outta me).

Anyone else with thoughts on 1.4 features, pro or con, please chime in!

Glad you found the option.  What we can do is that if you ever dismiss it, just ask you if you want to disable it for all current and future views (and only nag you once about this).

I do most of the DMD work on an older laptop, with a smallish screen, and just the trackpad (no mouse). Screen real estate is always an issue, on this computer. I'm more of a stick to the keyboard guy if possible too. So my experience in editing an existing program is that I don't really need to know what the next available C bit is, I'm just working with the one I've already assigned. So 1. The Element Picker basically fills half the ladder window. 2. If I'm just editing an existing element, and I want to see everything, I have to dismiss the popup. Here is an example from the other day. A set of 6 Less Than relational contacts, that I want to change to Less Than or Equal To. I'm not changing the addresses or values, just the type of element. So as I click along to each element, the Element Picker pops up and fills the screen. I don't need it, so I close it. As I say, its a small thing, and if I was creating a bunch of new stuff, I could see where it would come in handy. For working within existing ladder, I found it not so useful. Once I got used to it being there, I kind of learned to deal with it ( basically ignore it, and hit the Enter key), and once I dug around in the options and found how to disable it, everything was hunky-dory.

smallish screen, keyboard guy, editing an existing program

All very good reasons, which is why the option in the Ladder Options page is there so you can turn it off "for all new views".

I've attached a screen shot of the Ladder Options page to highlight where you can turn this option on/off.  Key point: you MUST check Apply to: New Views checkbox for any option changes to be applied to any future Ladder Views.  Access the Ladder Options page by right clicking anywhere in the Ladder View, select Options... menu at the bottom of the Ladder context menu.

Note: When this option is off, you can hit F9 (Select Element) to get a modal version of the Element Picker dialog ("modal dialog" means that you can't do anything else until you dismiss the dialog, like a message box).  So if you ever need it, you don't have to "re-enable" it - just hit F9 in the specific parameter field.

Franji1,

Nice explanation. Thanks.
