When I try to use the Help function from within DirectSoft 5.2, I get an error box stating "Failed to launch help." I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling, but this did not resolve the problem.
Any suggestions?

Make sure the help file is there:
c:\DirectSOFT5\Help\DSP50.chm (compiled HTML Help file)
If it is, make sure you can launch it yourself by browsing to it and double-clicking.

Yes, the file is there. When I double click to open, I get a message that says "Cannot open the file: mk:@MSITStore:C:\DirectSOFT5\Help\DSP50.chm."

It sounds like you probably cannot open any .CHM files ???. Look for other .CHM files and see (I'm guessing this is correct). Do a search beneath your c:\Windows folder if you don't know of any other .CHM files.
What O/S are you running, and what version is it. What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed?

You're right - I can't open any help files at all! Not sure when that happened :-\
I'm running XP Professional, SP2. Internet Explorer 6.

Most of the problems I found on the Internet dealing with this problem mentioned having older versions of I.E. (like 4.0 or 5.0).
I will look some more, but I recommend you look too (double the bandwidth!), and you better understand your setup.
Did you ever install the Beta version of IE7?
There were some XP updates that broke some people, but again, you'll probably need to look at these.
I googled
mk:@MSITStore
but you might start by googling
chm error
???
