That's what it would look like if it didn't see any devices. Perfectly normal...if there are no devices connected. I think we'll need a bit more info from you...

mo2004,

I assume you have Host Engineering Ethernet devices (ECOMs, etc.) attached to the network you are attempting to see with NetEdit? If so, and you are using TCP/IP (that's the button that is pressed in at the top), it could be that your PC doesn't see the devices because you have multiple NICs (Network Interface Cards). You can remedy this by disabling one of your NICs, or better yet, reprioritize them so that the one you are using is top priority:

          If you have WinXP:
               1  Start -->  Control Panel.
               2  Double-click on the "Network Connections" icon.
               3  On the menu at the top, select Advanced --> Advanced Settings...
               4  On the "Adapters and Bindings" tab, in the top window, select the connection you are using.
               5  Use the green arrows at the right to move this connection to the top of the list.
               6  Press <OK> and close Network Connections window.
               7  You may have to reboot your PC.

          If you have WinVista:
               1  Start -->  Control Panel.
               2  Double-click on the "Network & Sharing Center" icon.
               3  At the left of this window, click on "Manage network connections"
               4  Press the <ALT> key to make a menu appear at the top of this window.
               5  On the menu at the top, select Advanced --> Advanced Settings...
               6  On the "Adapters and Bindings" tab, in the top window, select the connection you are using.
               7  Use the green arrows at the right to move this connection to the top of the list.
               8  Press <OK> and close Network Connections window.
               9  You may have to reboot your PC.

NetEdit nor DirectSOFT nor the ECOM itself "know" that the Ethernet switch is wireless or wired. None of them "care" either. The reason NetEdit may not be able to see over wireless could be 2 things:
  • NetEdit, by default, doesn't wait long enough for the connection to accomodate the wireless time delay, or...
  • The wireless router is blocking broadcasts, which NetEdit uses to make the list.

Regardless, you could still make a connection using DirectSOFT (whether the device shows up in NetEdit or not). You can manually enter the IP address of the ECOM you wish to talk to in the Link in DirectSOFT. The only thing you might have to change is to increase the Timeout values and/or Retries in the link due to the delays over wireless.

I had the same problem and was able to determine that the windows firewall caused netedit to not be able to see the HO-ECOM - disabling the firewall worked like a charm!
