PLC on the internet

We have two sites that have 450 PLC each  with an H4-ECOM100; and each site has a static IP address connected to the Internet via DSL

Each is configured to allow access for programming using "Directsoft 5" - although there was some pain and agony getting the modems and routes configured in the beginning, and it is a great way to learn

It works very well and we can connect and program from anywhere, across the internet.

Now we are ready for the next phase I suppose - and would like to send some data between the two site's PLC automatically 

Of course we are NOT savvy  IT experts - but would like to attempt to pull this off, we could obtain someone to assist  - but not sure if, just any IT would be familiar with what we are doing and we would like to try.  Anyway someone has done this before I’m sure, and could recommend the best sequence to go about it.

So I guess my main question at this point is do I have to have a VPN?
On the other hand, can I just set up a peer to peer in netedit3 - and BOOM it works?

I know there has to be more to it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
